Project Overview

Grease Monkey is a Canberra-born restaurant known for serving burgers, pizzas, and fried chicken out of a converted mechanic’s garage. This project involved the creation of promotional bottle cap signage used to support in-store specials, delivered as a series of one-off executions produced on multiple occasions.

The Brief

The brief was to design promotional bottle caps that could be used to highlight specials while aligning with Grease Monkey’s established brand personality. The deliverable needed to be bold, recognisable, and suitable for repeat use without requiring broader campaign development.

My Role

I worked as the sole designer on the project, responsible for the creative direction and execution of the bottle cap signage, working directly with the restaurant to deliver the final artwork.

The Approach

The approach focused on keeping the design simple and character-led, using the Grease Monkey icon as the central visual element. The circular format of the bottle caps informed the layout, with the design built specifically to suit the physical constraints of the signage while maintaining clarity and impact.

Selected Outcomes

The final output consisted of custom-designed bottle cap signage used in-store to promote specials, with the cap format acting as both a functional and distinctive brand extension.

Outcomes

The signage was well received by the client and successfully supported in-store promotions, delivering a clear and on-brand visual cue that complemented the restaurant’s existing identity.

Reflection

This project highlighted the value of leaning into existing brand assets and characters when working on small-scale promotional pieces, and reinforced how simple, well-considered design can be effective when executed with clarity and intent.
